Traditional Train Excursions

This traditional trip in train is ¨todo un vacilón,¨ or all-in-fun! This train excursion is different from our others in that the trip itself is the main attraction. In addition, we offer a delightful yet brief lay-over in Río Grande de Atenas as we prepare the train for the return trip to San Jose.

Our special excursion departs the Pacific train station at 10:00am for a ride into the countryside and into the traditions of Costa Rican train travel. You will be entertained on-board by our friendly staff who involve the passengers in song, dance, and games along the way.

Once we depart the Pacific Station, we pass through La Sabana, a beautiful urban park which is a center for leisure and sporting activities in San José. After La Sabana, we wisk you over two major freeways, through the suburbs of Pavas and Lomas, and we cross the high bridges above the Ríos Torres and Virilla. We then pass San José´s most important hydropower facility, and after passing through the Pedregal Farms and crossing the Río Burmúdez, we enter the suburban town of San Antonio de Belén, where we pass a quaint, old-style railroad depot, sometimes even stopping to collect more passengers from the area.

Approximately half-way into our journey, our vendors of traditional food board the train, giving you the option to purchase traditional ¨gallos¨ with a selection of delicious fillings. As we leave the suburban area of the Central Valley, we then venture into the western hills, passing through Ciruelas and Turrucares. The train winds downhill on approach to Atenas and over the incomparable Río Grande bridge which stands 100 meters above the majestic river. Our destination is the restored train station at Río Grande de Atenas, where from there the day´s fun continues with a tourist center, music and dancing, swimming pools, food for sale, picnic areas, soccer area, and much more!

Once we have spent some time at the turist center in Atenas, we re-board the train where the party continues all the way back to San José. This tour provides as much entertainment, music, food, and fraternity as one desires at only a fraction of the cost of most local day-tours. Don´t miss the train!

Tours depart from the Pacific Train Station in San José promptly at 8:00am, check-in begins at 7:00am.
